Stop & Shop slashes prices on 3,000 items across all 88 stores

A total of 3,000 different items across all 88 Stop & Shop locations in the region are set to see price reductions, a change that shoppers will notice almost immediately.

Beginning this week, customers in eastern Massachusetts will see the biggest impact, with thousands of grocery staples marked down as part of the supermarket’s new push for savings.

The chain confirmed that more than 3,000 items will drop in cost overnight, with cuts ranging anywhere from 5% to 40%.

The discounts, which apply to both national brands and Stop & Shop’s own-label products, will be clearly marked in stores with yellow tags. Everyday essentials are among the items getting cheaper:
  • Italian bread will fall from $2.49 to $1.79 (a 28% drop)
  • A 5-pound bag of russet potatoes will dip from $3.99 to $3.69 (5% off)
  • Chobani non-fat yogurt will shrink from $1.79 to $1.49 (17% off)
Roger Wheeler, president of Stop & Shop, said the move is designed to provide “meaningful savings” at a time when families are still watching their budgets.

“Massachusetts is our home, and bringing meaningful savings to millions of customers right in our backyard is an important milestone,” Wheeler said.

“We know that value matters now more than ever, and this price investment—which is the largest one we’ve executed to date—is just one part of our strategy to deliver value, high-quality products, and great service.”

The cuts will roll out at all 88 Stop & Shop stores in eastern Massachusetts beginning Friday. Eventually, the company plans to extend reductions across all 116 Massachusetts locations.

The news comes as Stop & Shop continues to revamp its stores and customer experience, but it also follows controversy.

A 2024 study found that some stores in lower-income neighborhoods charged more than those in higher-income areas, sparking accusations of “corporate profiteering.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the practice, though the company denied targeting communities based on income, citing rent, labor, and property costs as factors.

Despite that history, the price drop represents the largest single investment in lowering grocery costs the chain has made.

For families trying to stretch their dollars, discounts on bread, produce, and dairy staples could make a significant difference.
