Sweet treat recall: Popular product pulled nationwide over allergy risk

While many are reaching for their favorite sweet and nutty treats, a new alert might have some thinking twice.

A recent recall has sparked fresh concerns, prompting a closer look at what's hiding in your pantry.

Officials are urging caution, though full details are still unfolding. It's a reminder that sometimes even familiar favorites come with unexpected surprises.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent recall notice for Mauna Loa Dark Chocolate Covered Macadamias due to the presence of undeclared allergens that could pose a serious health risk.

The Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company, renowned for their tropical treats, has identified a potential contamination with almonds and cashews in their 0.6 oz and 4 oz bags.

This discovery was made during routine internal quality control checks, and it's a significant concern for those with allergies or severe sensitivity to these nuts.

Ingesting even a small amount could trigger serious or life-threatening allergic reactions for these individuals.

The recall spans across a wide swath of the United States, affecting consumers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, as well as the territory of Guam.

The products have been available at various retailers, making it crucial for shoppers nationwide to be vigilant.

Identifying the Recalled Products
To determine if your chocolate-covered macadamias are part of the recall, look for the following identifiers:
  • The 0.6 oz bag with UPC 0 72992 05464 4, specifically lot numbers K5069C1 and K5069C2, and a best by date of 10/2026.
  • The 4 oz bag with UPC 0 72992 05556 6, marked with lot numbers B4339E1 and B4340E1, and a best by date of 07/2026.

If you find that you have purchased any of these products, the FDA and Mauna Loa urge you not to consume them.

Instead, they recommend returning the items to the place of purchase for a full refund. This proactive step not only protects your health but also helps retailers ensure that the recalled products are removed from circulation.
