The Law That Doubles the Cuteness

It sounds like a punchline, but it’s real: in Switzerland, it’s actually illegal to own just one guinea pig.

Why? Because guinea pigs are highly social animals, and keeping a single one is considered a form of animal cruelty. Swiss law requires that they be kept in pairs or groups so they can have the companionship they need to thrive.

The rule is part of the country’s broader animal welfare laws, which also set standards for everything from parrots to goldfish. In fact, Switzerland is known worldwide for its progressive stance on protecting the well-being of pets and farm animals alike.

And here’s a quirky twist—what if one guinea pig passes away, leaving the other alone? Some Swiss pet-rental services actually “loan out” guinea pigs so that no piggy has to be lonely.

Thinking about getting a furry little friend? Remember: for guinea pigs, happiness really does come in twos.
