The Moai

Did you know those iconic "heads" on Easter Island actually have hidden torsos beneath the earth? Out of the 1,043 moai scattered across the island, many stand tall at an impressive 13 feet and 10 tons, with their backs facing the sea atop stone platforms called ahu. Some even sport a red topknot, or pukao, as a nod to ancient hairstyles! Buried treasures still lie in the island’s Rano Raraku quarry, including “El Gigante,” a colossal 69-foot, 200-ton moai that never left its birthplace. Curious to share a fun fact? Drop it in the forum!
