The World’s Smallest Country
It has its own flag, its own leader, even its own post office. But you could walk across it in 20 minutes.
The world’s smallest country isn’t an island or a remote outpost—it’s nestled right inside the city of Rome.
Vatican City spans just 0.19 square miles. That’s smaller than many neighborhoods.
And yet, this tiny enclave holds global significance. It’s the spiritual center of the Roman Catholic Church, home to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Pope himself. It has its own laws, its own guards, even its own coins and stamps.
In every way that matters, it is a nation—just a very small one.

Have you ever visited a country in just one afternoon? Or been moved by a place much smaller than its history? Tell us about it—we’d love to hear where you’ve been.
