The World's Oldest Artwork
In 2019, archaeologists reported the discovery of a cave painting on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, estimated to be at least 44,000 years old. This artwork, found in the limestone cave of Leang Bulu’ Sipong 4, depicts a hunting scene with human-animal hybrid figures, known as therianthropes, pursuing native species like warty pigs and dwarf buffaloes. These discoveries highlight Sulawesi's significant role in the history of human creativity and suggest that the origins of figurative art may extend further back than previously believed.
