This “better than ALDI” supermarket is expanding—will a new location open near you?

If you’ve ever found yourself torn between the low prices at ALDI and the desire for a little more variety in your grocery cart, you’re not alone.

But there’s a new player in town that’s making waves—and it just might be coming to a neighborhood near you.

Lidl, the German supermarket chain that’s been dubbed by many as a “better version of ALDI,” is on a mission to win over American shoppers, and their latest expansion plans prove they’re just getting started.

Lidl’s Big US Push: Where Are the New Stores?
Lidl, already a household name across Europe with over 12,000 stores worldwide, has been steadily growing its U.S. footprint since opening its first American location in 2017.

While ALDI has a head start (and more than 2,300 U.S. stores), Lidl is catching up fast—especially along the East Coast.

This month, Lidl is set to open two brand-new locations, bringing its U.S. store count to nearly 180.

The exact addresses are still under wraps, but if you live in or near any of these states, keep your eyes peeled:

- Delaware
- Georgia
- Maryland
- New Jersey
- New York
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Virginia
- Washington, DC

Recent grand openings in New Jersey (Paramus and Livingston) and New York (Brooklyn, Pelham, the Bronx, and Glen Oaks) have drawn crowds, and there’s even more excitement brewing with a Manhattan store on the horizon.

Lidl is also eyeing further expansion in Washington, DC and Atlanta, two markets where shoppers are hungry for more affordable grocery options.

What Makes Lidl Different?
So, what’s all the fuss about? Why are shoppers calling Lidl a 'better version of ALDI'? Here’s what sets Lidl apart:
  • Curated selection: Like ALDI, Lidl focuses on a streamlined selection of mostly private-label products, but many shoppers say Lidl’s variety is broader and more international.
  • Fresh bakery: Lidl’s in-store bakeries are a major draw, with fresh pastries, breads, and croissants baked daily.
  • Global flavors: From German cheesecake to Italian tiramisu, Lidl’s shelves are stocked with unique imports you won’t find at your average supermarket.
  • Quality at low prices: Lidl’s mission is to offer “incredible quality at unbeatable prices,” even as inflation drives up costs elsewhere.

Frank Kerr, Lidl US’s chief customer officer, put it simply: “We want to be the only grocery store that offers incredible quality at unbeatable prices, despite rising costs with inflation or other external factors.”

Lidl vs. ALDI: The Battle of the German Grocers
It’s no secret that Lidl and ALDI are often compared. Both are German-owned, both focus on private-label goods, and both have a reputation for rock-bottom prices. ALDI is owned by the Albrecht family, while Lidl belongs to the Schwarz Group.

But while ALDI has been in the US since 1976, Lidl is the new kid on the block (arrived in 2017) and it’s quickly building a loyal following.

One shopper highlighted Lidl’s impressive quality and wide range of international products, though they admitted ALDI might have the edge when it comes to everyday essentials.

The latter also has a much stronger presence in the US, with around 2,300 locations, projected to reach 3,000 by 2028.

Another customer declared Lidl the better choice, especially impressed by its fresh bakery offerings and bread selection.

“Lidl! Better selection, variety, and quality,” added a third enthusiast.

With grocery prices still climbing, more Americans are looking for ways to stretch their food budgets without sacrificing quality.

Lidl’s expansion is good news for anyone who loves a bargain—and a little adventure in the grocery aisle.

Plus, as competition heats up, both Lidl and ALDI are rolling out new deals and products to win your loyalty. (ALDI fans, don’t worry—there are still plenty of reasons to love your favorite store, from $4.49 garden finds to summer must-haves.)

If you’re on the East Coast, there’s a good chance a Lidl could be coming to your area soon. Keep an eye on local news, and check Lidl’s website for updates on new store openings.
