With just over two months remaining, millions of Americans affected by a major insurance data breach have a limited window to claim their share of a $6 million settlement. If you've been a customer of certain life insurance companies, this could mean money in your pocket—but only if you act before the December deadline.
The settlement stems from a cyberattack that hit Landmark Admin, a Texas-based company that handles administrative services for insurance companies. The breach potentially exposed personal information of up to 1.6 million individuals, making it one of the larger insurance industry data breaches in recent years.
What happened and when
The data breach occurred between May 13 and June 17, 2024, when hackers gained unauthorized access to Landmark Admin's computer systems. The attackers accessed names, Social Security numbers, financial accounts, driver's license numbers, health insurance data, and other sensitive information.
Landmark Admin, based in Brownwood, Texas, provides third-party administrative solutions for life insurance and annuity companies, offering services including policy tax reporting, policy accounting, and regulatory reporting assistance. The company serves as a behind-the-scenes administrator that many policyholders may not have heard of directly.
Six insurance companies affected
The data breach impacted customers of these insurance companies:
• American Benefit Life Insurance Company
• American Monumental Life Insurance Company
• Capitol Life Insurance Company
• Continental Mutual Insurance Company
• Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company
• Accendo Insurance Company
Two paths to compensation
The settlement offers affected individuals two different compensation options, though you can only choose one:
Option 1: Documented losses - Up to $2,500 for individuals who experienced financial losses stemming from fraud or identity theft linked to the data breach. You must provide supporting documentation, such as credit reports, bank statements, and police reports, and any monetary loss must have occurred after June 17, 2024.
Option 2: No-documentation payment - A flat payment of $30 for class members without proof of losses. However, this amount may be reduced or increased on a pro rata basis, depending on the number of valid claims and their value.

Documentation that counts
If you're seeking the higher compensation for documented losses, you'll need solid proof. Acceptable documentation includes:
- Bank statements showing unauthorized charges
- Credit reports with fraudulent accounts
- Police reports for identity theft
- Bills for credit monitoring services you purchased
- Documentation of time spent resolving identity theft issues
The key requirement is that losses must be “more likely than not” connected to the breach and occurred after June 17, 2024.

Modern payment options available
Eligible class members can choose to be paid via Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or a physical check. This variety of payment methods makes it easier for people who prefer digital transactions or those who want a traditional paper check.
For those unfamiliar with digital payment platforms, a traditional check remains available and might be the most comfortable option.
Important deadlines ahead
The deadline to submit claims is Friday, December 26, 2025, at 11:59 PM Central Time. Missing this deadline means forfeiting any right to compensation.
Other key dates:
- November 25, 2025: Deadline to opt out of the settlement if you want to sue independently
- January 29, 2026: Final approval hearing
- Payments are issued approximately 90 days after final approval and claim processing completion

This settlement represents accountability for companies that handle your sensitive personal information. While no amount of money can undo the inconvenience and worry caused by a data breach, this compensation recognizes the real impact these incidents have on people's lives.
