Trump launches his "Gold Card" with a familiar flair

A new unveiling is stirring conversation across political and public circles. It’s sleek, gold, and comes with a multimillion-dollar price tag that’s drawing attention for both its purpose and presentation.

While the concept has been seen in other forms, this one stands apart—especially due to a design choice that feels immediately familiar to many.

With interest building and questions emerging, the spotlight is now on what this new launch could signal in the months ahead.

A new gold-colored visa card was unveiled, offering wealthy foreigners a route to US citizenship.

The card costs $5 million and includes permanent residency benefits as well as a pathway to citizenship.

Its most talked-about feature?

It bears the official portrait of former President Donald Trump.

The image used has been compared to his stern mugshot taken during a courthouse visit amid his reelection campaign.

Emblazoned with “The Trump Card,” the visa is roughly the size of a credit card and entirely gold in appearance.

“Pretty exciting,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, according to DailyMail.com.

“Anybody want to buy one?” he quipped, holding up the card for the cameras.

“For $5 million, this could be yours,” he said.

The visa is an upscale version of the current EB-5 program, which already allows foreign investors to apply for residency by investing $800,000 to $1 million in the US

Trump previously teased the card back in February, stating, “You have a green card. This is a gold card.”

“We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,” he added.

He claimed the program would bring “wealthy people will be coming into our country” through direct investment.

The card was introduced during a week of financial turbulence tied to the announcement of sweeping new tariffs.

Markets reacted sharply, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping nearly 1,700 points—the worst single-day fall since 2020. The top automaker announced layoffs the same day, as concerns grew over possible retaliatory tariffs from US trading partners.

The S&P 500 also fell by nearly 5%, erasing $2 trillion in value.

Despite the market reaction, Trump told reporters, Americans shouldn't worry about their 401(k)s.

“I haven’t checked my 401(k),” he added, referencing his own holdings in golf, real estate, and a media company.

He introduced the card en route to a Saudi-backed golf event hosted at one of his resorts.

The timing of the visa launch prompted speculation about whether it was used to distract from broader economic concerns.

Trump referred to the day as “Liberation Day” while promoting both the tariffs and the Gold Card.

He described the US as “a sick patient” undergoing treatment that would soon lead to a “booming country.”

He also became the card’s “first buyer.”

There are legal limits on how much imagery a living person—especially a sitting or former president—can use on official US documents.

According to post-Civil War congressional rules, portraits on federal currency, notes, and securities must be of deceased individuals.

However, those rules do not apply to privately issued immigration-related documents.

Still, a Trump ally, Rep. Joe Wilson, is backing legislation to put Trump’s face on a proposed $250 bill.

Critics have questioned whether the Gold Card blurs the line between national policy and personal branding.

Supporters argue it could be a profitable way to attract high-net-worth individuals to invest in the US economy.

The card’s rollout adds a new dimension to ongoing debates about immigration, wealth, and the commercialization of citizenship.

The discussion has also resurfaced concerns over the treatment of green card holders, some of whom have reportedly faced detainment or deportation at entry points under the current administration.

Whether the initiative proves successful remains to be seen. But with a $5 million price tag and Trump’s face front and center, it’s certainly captured public attention.
