Unlock the secrets of the digital world: How Denver’s surprising new program is empowering adults 60+ with apps and AI skills
- Replies 0
If you thought smartphones, apps, and artificial intelligence were only for the younger crowd, think again.
A new program is helping adults 60 and older step into the digital world with confidence—proving that age is no barrier to learning.
From paying bills online to recognizing digital scams, older adults are picking up life-changing skills in an environment designed just for them. The goal isn’t just to use technology—it’s to thrive with it.
Take Jim Wells, for example. At 85, Jim never pictured himself using his phone for everything from banking to shopping to managing his health.
But after joining the free classes at Senior Planet—an initiative from AARP in partnership with Verizon Wireless—he’s become a digital dynamo. “Things I’ve learned about my phone is almost everything,” Jim says with a hearty laugh. And he’s not alone.
Judy Terlep, another enthusiastic participant, admits she was nervous at first. “I love it and yet it’s scary as heck,” she confides.
“I love the fact that I can do my wallet and ID and everything on my phone so I don’t have to carry things, but it’s scary.” Judy’s experience is a familiar one: excitement mixed with a healthy dose of caution.
What makes Senior Planet so special? The classes are designed specifically for older adults, with patient, hands-on instruction and a supportive environment where no question is too small.
Whether you’re learning to send your first text, exploring the world of apps, or dipping your toes into artificial intelligence, you’ll find friendly faces and expert guidance every step of the way.
“We use technology as a tool for empowerment,” explains Dayton Romero of AARP. “It’s important that they have the tools and the confidence to navigate these types of things, especially the keen eye to recognize when something could hurt or exploit them.”
And that “keen eye” is more important than ever. According to a 2025 report from the US Senate Special Committee on Aging, Americans filed more than 2.6 million fraud complaints last year.
Older adults lost nearly $5 billion to scams—many of them powered by sophisticated artificial intelligence and digital impersonation. In Colorado alone, over 73,000 complaints were filed.
Jim Wells sums up the new attitude: “I’m not immune, but I’m going to make it damn difficult for them to get to me.” That’s the spirit!
