Urgent recall alert: Popular sorbet affected!

Dessert lovers, beware! A popular frozen treat has been recalled due to a serious mislabeling issue.

Could this recall put your health at risk?

Wegmans, the popular Northeastern supermarket chain, has issued a recall on a beloved mochi-covered sorbet.

The product in question is the “My/Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet,” which has been found to potentially contain undeclared egg, an allergen that can trigger severe reactions in some individuals.

This recall is particularly crucial for those among us with egg allergies, as accidental consumption could lead to life-threatening conditions such as anaphylaxis.

Food allergies are more common than many realize, affecting approximately 6 percent of American adults and 8 percent of children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

With such a significant portion of the population at risk, it's essential to stay informed about the foods we eat and the potential allergens they may contain.

The specific details of the recalled “My/Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet” include six-count packages marked with the UPC number “0-70934-99868-1” and lot codes “337-24” or “341-24.”

While these products are distributed nationwide, the recall currently applies to items sold at Wegmans stores and approximately 100 Target locations.

Despite the recall being described as “really small” by a My/Mochi spokesperson, involving just 1,200 cases, the risk to those with allergies is significant.

As of the time of publication, Target had not yet listed the recall on their product recall page, and Newsweek's request for comment from Target remains unanswered.

Wegmans, headquartered in New York, operates in several states including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, as well as the District of Columbia.

Customers who have purchased the recalled sorbet can return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Wegmans has provided a contact number for those with additional questions: 1-855-934-3663, available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For most people, the presence of egg in a dessert may not be cause for concern.

However, for those with egg allergies, the consequences can be dire.

Anaphylaxis, the most severe allergic reaction, demands immediate medical attention and can manifest as throat swelling, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and even loss of consciousness.

Other symptoms can include rashes, hives, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping.

This recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accurate labeling and awareness of food allergens.

In the past, such oversights have had tragic consequences, including the death of a woman who unknowingly consumed cookies containing peanuts, leading to a recall by Stew Leonard's, another Northeastern supermarket chain.

Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “[t]his is a heartbreaking tragedy that should never have happened.”
