Watermelon-Basil Agua Fresca

Remember those long, sticky summer afternoons when the only relief was a cold slice of watermelon and a shady spot to sit? This old-fashioned agua fresca brings that feeling back—with a grown-up twist of lime and basil, just enough to make it feel special.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups ripe watermelon, cubed
  • 1 cup cold water
  • Juice of half a fresh lime
  • 2 teaspoons agave syrup (or honey, if that’s what you’ve got on hand)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh basil, finely chopped
  • Ice cubes, for serving
Directions:
  1. Pop the watermelon, water, lime juice, agave, and basil into your blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and sunset-pink.
  3. Want it a little lighter? Pour it through a fine mesh strainer to take out the pulp—it’ll be smoother, like a memory.
  4. Serve over ice in your favorite glass. Sip slowly, preferably with your feet up and a story on your mind.
Extra tip: A splash of sparkling water brings a little fizz and fun, just like the soda fountains used to.
