What’s in your fridge? FDA issues alert on contaminated produce

Attention, health-conscious consumers! A staple in many kitchens has recently been the subject of a serious health alert.

If you're a fan of these slender, white fungi, often used in soups and salads for their crunchy texture and mild flavor, you'll want to read on to ensure your safety and that of your loved ones.

Harvest NYC Inc. has issued an urgent recall of its enoki mushrooms due to a potential risk of listeria contamination.

This recall, announced on April 16, has raised concerns as no illnesses had been reported by April 18, indicating that consumers may be unaware of the lurking danger in their refrigerators.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at a store in Buffalo, New York, uncovered the potential for contamination.

Subsequent testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis.

The recalled enoki mushrooms are packaged in 200-gram green and plastic packages, easily identifiable by the UPC barcode 6975730520101 on a black label.

These packages were distributed nationwide in retail stores by Hofood99 Inc., based in Oakland Gardens, New York.

It's crucial to check your mushrooms if you've purchased any recently, as they could be part of this nationwide distribution.

If you have purchased enoki mushrooms between January 11 and January 31, 2025, the advice is clear: do not consume them.

Listeria monocytogenes is not your average foodborne pathogen. It can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection that's particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

While healthy adults may experience only temporary symptoms, the risks for vulnerable groups can be severe, including fatal outcomes.

Symptoms of listeriosis can be deceptive, as they resemble those of other illnesses: high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Pregnant people need to be especially cautious, as listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
