What you need to know: Inside the new "war room" fighting for Social Security

For millions of Americans, Social Security is more than just a government program—it’s a crucial source of stability after years of hard work.

But recent changes and proposals have raised concerns, prompting a new effort to protect the program’s future.

Enter the "war room"—a strategic initiative led by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden, aimed at addressing what they see as potential risks to Social Security.

With conversations heating up, it’s important to understand what’s happening, why it matters, and what this "war room" hopes to accomplish.

A Strategic Fight for Social Security

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an entity created by former President Donald Trump and overseen by Elon Musk, has introduced significant changes at the Social Security Administration (SSA).

These changes have sparked debate, leading Senators Warren and Wyden to take action.

The "war room" will focus on lobbying, field office visits, town halls, and social media outreach to push back against proposed Social Security changes.

"Social Security is under attack. Social Security is under siege. The chainsaw is pointed at their earned Social Security benefits. We believe Republicans have manufactured a crisis at Social Security," Wyden said at a news conference.

"We should be expanding Social Security benefits, not cutting them, and we should ensure the wealthiest Americans contribute their fair share to the program. It’s time to stand up for Social Security," Warren stated.

She added, "We can protect Social Security from the influence of Trump and Musk and create a future where everyone can retire with dignity."

The Debate Over SSA’s Death Records

DOGE has also faced criticism for its "major cleanup" of the SSA's death records.

The agency reported updating over 9.9 million records for individuals aged 120 and above, marking them as deceased.

"For the past 4 weeks, @SocialSecurity has been executing a major cleanup of their records," DOGE posted on Musk-owned social media platform, X.

The effort came after Musk's claims that millions of deceased people were still collecting benefits.

"Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security," Musk joked in a social media post.

However, the SSA clarified that those individuals weren't receiving payments.

"The data in question pertains to individuals without a recorded date of death. While they may not be receiving benefits, it's important to maintain accurate records," the SSA stated on March 5.

Technical Issues and Leadership Concerns

At the same time, some Social Security beneficiaries have reported difficulties accessing their accounts, receiving incorrect payment messages, or facing login issues.

The SSA acknowledged "a couple of brief disruptions," each lasting around 20 minutes.

"There have been a trickle of stories about troubles accessing Social Security webpages," said Linda Benesch, spokeswoman for Social Security Works. "It could turn into a flood in the coming weeks and months."

The war room’s creation comes alongside a delayed vote on Trump's nominee to lead the SSA, Frank Bisignano.

The Senate Finance Committee failed to reach a quorum on Tuesday, delaying the scheduled confirmation vote.

Wyden said a whistleblower reported that Bisignano "has been talking to people at Social Security every day for weeks now."

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, an Idaho Republican, stated Bisignano doesn’t have a role at the SSA and wasn’t involved in decision-making.

Crapo added that the nominee disclosed prior communications with SSA officials as part of preparing for his confirmation hearing.

Yes, Social Security does need an audit but no reductions. Honest people and their employers contribute and the people contributing expect that money to be there for them to collect a monthly check upon retirement. I have contributed from 1975 through 2020 and it included Medicare payments being taken from my paycheck. Why am I paying for Medicare that I already paid for? Why is my whole health not covered? Why should I have to pay for extra vision and dental and prescriptions, that should be included in Medicare.
