Which came first: lighters or matches?
Did you know that lighters were invented before matches? Read more below!
The first lighter, the Döbereiner’s lamp, appeared in 1823 and used a chemical reaction to produce a flame. However, this device was bulky and quite dangerous! It wasn’t until 1826 that John Walker invented the first friction match, known as "Lucifers." These were portable and easier to use, despite having some issues with safety and odor.
As technology evolved, lighters became safer and more practical with the development of ferrocerium and butane lighters, which are now the standard. Who would have thought a lighter would predate the match?
