Which messaging app won’t blow your cover? Expert weighs in after Trump team leak

In an era where our conversations are as likely to happen on screens as face-to-face, the security of our digital dialogue has never been more critical.

The recent inadvertent sharing of sensitive US war plans via a group chat has thrown a glaring spotlight on the importance of secure messaging apps.

This incident has left many of us in the over-60s community wondering: just how private are our private messages?

The accidental inclusion of The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, in a Signal group chat discussing US military actions has sparked a nationwide debate on digital privacy.

The blunder, which involved high-ranking officials, was described by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer as a “stunning breach of military intelligence.”

But was the app at fault, or was it simply human error?

Tech expert Jason Aten, a columnist at Inc., has weighed in, declaring Signal as one of the most secure messaging apps available.

Signal's end-to-end encryption means that not even the company itself can access the content of your conversations or the metadata associated with them.

Signal president Meredith Whittaker has touted the app as the “gold standard in private comms,” emphasizing its open-source, nonprofit status and its commitment to protecting both message contents and metadata.

Despite the recent incident, Signal's security credentials remain robust. However, former President Trump suggested that Signal “could be defective,” highlighting the app's potential vulnerabilities.

For those in the Apple ecosystem, iMessage is touted by Aten as “arguably the best and the most secure option.”

Apple's commitment to privacy is well-documented, and iMessage's 1:1 encryption model for group chats is a standout feature. Each message within a group is encrypted individually, potentially making it even more secure than Signal.

The catch? You need an iPhone to benefit from iMessage's full security features. Cross-platform messages, such as those between Android and Apple devices, revert to less secure formats like RCS or SMS. Moreover, if you back up your messages to iCloud, copies are stored on Apple's servers, which could be accessed by law enforcement if necessary.

Telegram offers encryption in its “Secret Chat” feature, but it's not the default setting, leaving standard messages vulnerable.

Meta's Messenger is rolling out end-to-end encryption, aiming to match WhatsApp's security level, but it's not there yet.

Aten reminds us that no matter how secure an app's encryption may be, it's no defense against human error.

Including the wrong person in a group chat, as happened with the US war plans leak, will expose your messages regardless of the app's security features.

Key Takeaways
  • An expert indicates that Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps available due to its end-to-end encryption and the company's inability to access metadata.
  • Apple's iMessage is considered very secure because of Apple's strong commitment to security and privacy, along with a 1:1 encryption model for group chats, though it requires an iPhone to use all features.
  • Telegram and Meta's Messenger app have certain functionalities for encryption, but are not fully end-to-end encrypted by default, potentially leaving messages vulnerable.
  • The columnist emphasises that even the most secure encryption cannot prevent human errors, such as mistakenly adding someone to a confidential group chat.
