Who's The Yule Cat?
While the holiday season is all about cozy drinks and festive feelings, in some parts of the world, Christmas brings in the Jólakötturinn, or the Yule Cat, a black cat the size of a house that roams the Icelandic countryside on Christmas Eve. That’s right! In Iceland, children don’t get the promise of gifts if they’ve been nice all year or get told that they’ll receive coal if they’re naughty. They get a warning that a monster will eat them if they misbehave! Specifically, children must put on the new clothes they got at Christmas or else they’ll get hunted and eaten alive by the Yule Cat.
