Would You Rather? 05.15.2025

Hello GrayViners,

Sometimes these midweek moments call for a little check-in—a pause between errands, calls, or quiet afternoons just to say, “How are you doing?” I always find comfort in the little things, especially when the days feel long. Lately, that comfort has taken me straight to the kitchen trying new recipes, making old favorites, and occasionally setting off the smoke alarm (kidding! don’t worry, all are under control).

That brings me to today’s flavorful question: Would you rather give up salt or sugar in your cooking? 🧂🍯

It’s not an easy decision! Salt brings out those rich, savory notes, while sugar has a way of turning simple dishes into warm, nostalgic bites.

If I had to choose… well, let’s just say my sweet tooth might have a strong opinion. 😉

I’d love to hear your take, drop your thoughts below!

With taste and curiosity,
Sophia 💖

Id give up salt. Use Mrs Dash for cooking. If baking using butter you can omit salt if using salted butter

I’d give up salt. I use pink salt anyway which is a healthier option. I don’t eat a lot of sugar but if I do I stick to healthy options like 70% and up dark chocolate.

I would give up sugar. Fortunately, for my diet, sweets are not important to me. I'm more interested in the savory foods

I have not used salt in years as a lot of foods are naturally salty. I had to give up sugar for health reasons. I also read this morning in AARP that
consuming excessive added sugar can contribute to accelerated aging, both in terms of your body's cellular processes and your skin's appearance. High sugar intake can lead to a process called glycation, where sugar molecules bind to proteins, including collagen and elastin, and form harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs).These AGEs can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and damage to the skin's structure, contributing to premature wrinkles, sagging, and other visible signs of aging.

That's no problem I don't use either one, unless it's in a recipe.

I’d give up salt! Can’t live without chocolate (I’m a confessed chocoholic). I rarely add salt when cooking.

I am diabetic so no sugar. I also have kidney disease so no salt. Get me near pepper though. I put it on almost everything.

I too have kidney disease. I put pepper on a lot of things as well. You might want to try Chervil . It is a spice that has a pepper flavor and is part of the parsley family.
