If you’ve ever hesitated to return an online purchase because the thought of leaving home felt like too much effort, there’s finally a reason to relax.
A new partnership between Amazon and the United States Postal Service (USPS) is changing the way returns are handled, making it possible to send packages back without stepping outside your door. This quietly launched service brings doorstep convenience to shoppers who prefer to skip long lines and crowded stores.
Amazon returns, now at your doorstep
For years, Amazon has made returns relatively painless, with thousands of drop-off locations. But for many older Americans, the hassle of packing up a box, printing a label, and making a special trip out was still a barrier—especially if mobility is a concern or you simply prefer to avoid crowded stores.
Enter the new USPS partnership. As of this summer, Amazon has started rolling out a service that lets you schedule a USPS pickup for your return right from your doorstep. No more lugging boxes to the car or waiting in line at the post office. Just set your package outside, and let the mail carrier do the rest.
What you need to know about Amazon's USPS doorstep returns
Eligible Items: The service covers Amazon returns weighing between 1 and 15 pounds. That means most of your everyday returns—clothes, books, small electronics—are fair game.
Where Is It Available? Amazon hasn’t published a full list of participating cities yet. The rollout is still in its early stages, so availability may depend on where you live. If you don’t see the option at checkout, keep an eye out—it could be coming to your area soon.
How to Use It: When you initiate a return on Amazon, look for the “USPS Pickup” option among your return methods. If it’s available, you’ll be able to schedule a pickup date. Just pack up your item, attach the return label, and leave it at your designated pickup spot (usually your front door or mailbox).
Other Return Options Remain: If you prefer dropping off your return, Amazon’s 8,000+ drop-off locations are still available nationwide.
Why is Amazon doing this?
Amazon’s mission has always been about making shopping (and returning) as easy as possible. By adding doorstep pickups, they’re removing one more hurdle for customers, especially those who may have difficulty getting out or simply value their time.
But there’s another side to this story: the USPS. The Postal Service has faced financial and logistical challenges for years, reporting a $1.8 billion loss in controllable expenses in 2024 alone. This partnership could provide a much-needed boost in business for the USPS, helping to keep those familiar blue trucks rolling through your neighborhoods.
Despite its struggles, the USPS remains one of America’s most beloved institutions, second only to the National Park Service, according to a 2024 Pew Research Center survey. This new partnership could help keep it strong for years to come.
Details are still emerging, and Amazon hasn’t made a big splash about the new service yet. As the program expands, we expect to see more cities added and perhaps even more features (like real-time pickup tracking or expanded weight limits).

Your other return options aren't going anywhere
Don't worry if the doorstep service isn't available in your area yet—Amazon isn't replacing its existing return network. Four out of five Amazon customers in the US have access to at least one of the company's 8,000-plus drop-off locations, with a label-free, shipping box-free return option available within 5 miles of their home.
These include familiar locations like:
- Whole Foods stores
- UPS Store locations
- Kohl's departments stores
- Amazon Lockers at grocery stores and shopping centers
- Staples office supply stores

Tips for a Smooth Return Experience
Double-Check Eligibility: Not all items or locations are covered yet. If you don’t see the USPS pickup option, try again in a few weeks.
Pack Carefully: Make sure your return is securely packed and the label is clearly visible. The easier it is for your mail carrier, the smoother the process.
Communicate with Your Carrier: If you have special instructions (like a preferred pickup spot), leave a note or update your Amazon account accordingly.
