General Discussion Thread 05.06.2025

Happy Tuesday, GrayViners! I (Ally) hope this newsletter finds you happy this morning. Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and I wanted to ask: What’s one piece of advice your mom (or mother figure!) gave you that you still carry to this day? I'd love to hear all about it. 💜 When I was a kid, I got into a lot of fights (I know, I was a very troublesome child), and one day my mom had one too many visits to the principal’s office so she sat me down and told me: “There’s nothing wrong with fighting for yourself, but there are many different ways to go about it.” I remember these words every day, and live a very peaceful life because of it! 😄

Or, if you have something else you'd like to share—whether it’s a cool fact you just learned, a funny story, or something that’s been bothering you—feel free to comment them down, too! This General Discussion Thread is created just for you, so feel free to engage with your fellow members!

Now, what's on YOUR mind today?

My mother told me when I was a teenager that if you hang with trash you will become known as trash too. My daughter used that on her son only nicer.

My mom always said to be mindful of your surroundings. This is good advice as people now a day are always texting or talking on phone while walking. This is how people are getting hit by cars and getting phones stolen from them as they have no clue what is going on around them.

Mom always used to say, you made your bed, now lie in it…
Thank you so much for sharing that classic bit of wisdom @Northerngal@1962 ! "You made your bed, now lie in it" really speaks to personal responsibility, doesn’t it? It’s one of those sayings that sticks with you and pops into your head at just the right moment. Did your mom usually say this with a bit of humor, or was it her way of keeping everyone in check? And has there been a time when this advice really guided your decisions?

When I was raising my children and constantly correcting them about many things, my mom would say-pick your battles.
Thank you for sharing that gentle reminder from your mom @emma ! "Pick your battles" is such wise advice, especially when it comes to parenting! It’s amazing how those simple words can make a big difference in how we approach conflict and communication. Was there a moment when this advice really changed the way you handled a situation with your kids? And do you find yourself passing that same wisdom on to others now?

My dear mother used to say: Don't be blue, Smile and the world smiles with you.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful piece of your mom’s wisdom @kiki ! "Don’t be blue, smile and the world smiles with you" is such a lovely reminder of the power of positivity and how our attitude can influence those around us. Did her words help you get through any particularly tough times? And do you find yourself saying something similar to others now when they need a lift?

My Mama always said, "this too shall pass.". 😇
Thank you for sharing that timeless piece of comfort from your Mama @suesq ! "This too shall pass." 😇 It’s such a powerful reminder that no matter how hard things get, nothing lasts forever, and better days are always ahead. Do you remember the first time those words really helped you through something challenging? And have you found yourself leaning on that phrase over the years in different stages of life?

If it looks too good to be true ~ it normally is.
Thank you for sharing that very practical bit of wisdom @SusanS930 ! "If it looks too good to be true, it normally is" is one of those life lessons that saves us from so many potential pitfalls—especially these days with scams and slick sales pitches around every corner. Did your mom’s advice ever save you from something that didn’t quite pass the sniff test? And do you find yourself passing this on to the younger generation?

necessity is the mother of invention" You can do anything
Thank you for sharing such an empowering piece of advice @Wiseoldone ! “Necessity is the mother of invention” paired with “You can do anything” is such a motivating combination—it’s like your mom believed in creativity and resilience in equal measure. Was there a time when this advice helped you come up with a clever solution or push through a challenge? And do you still draw on that confidence boost today when things get tricky?

Never judge a book by its cover, and never ever people, what you see is just a mask
Thank you for sharing that meaningful advice from your mom @Dinah ! "Never judge a book by its cover," is such a powerful reminder to look beyond appearances and show kindness and understanding. Has this perspective helped you connect more deeply with others or avoid making quick assumptions? And do you find it’s something you often reflect on in your day-to-day life?

To have a friend, you have to be a friend.
Thank you for sharing that beautiful reminder @dkleslie52 !"To have a friend, you have to be a friend" really captures the heart of true connection and mutual care. It’s such simple advice, but so powerful in practice. Has this guided the way you’ve built and maintained friendships over the years? And is there a particular friendship where this advice made all the difference?
