Check your calendar: Your SSI payments will drop on these dates

Managing Social Security payments can sometimes feel like navigating through a maze.

But don't worry, dear readers, we're here to help you stay on track.

This May, you might notice an unusual change in your bank statement—two Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments instead of one.

Wondering how that will happen? Let’s take a closer look.

The SSI program is a crucial lifeline for millions of Americans.

It’s designed to provide essential financial support for those with limited income, helping cover basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing.

And this May, thanks to an interesting quirk in the calendar, SSI beneficiaries will receive not one, but two payments!

A delightful surprise: Double SSI payments in May

Here’s how it works: SSI checks are usually sent out on the 1st of every month, but if that day happens to fall on a weekend or holiday, the payment date shifts.

In April, everything went according to plan with payments rolling out on the first, a regular Tuesday.

But May is a different story.

SSI recipients will first receive their regular payment on May 1st.

Then, just when you think you’re done, a second payment will be issued on May 30th!

Why? Because June 1st falls on a weekend, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) doesn’t want you to wait an extra day for your benefits.

And don’t worry, this isn’t just a one-time occurrence.

Mark your calendars for August, too!

In August, you’ll receive one payment on August 1st, and then another on August 29th.

What is SSI and how can you apply?

SSI is a vital support system for many, including children with qualifying disabilities.

To qualify, individuals typically need to have a monthly income of $2,019 or less.

If you or someone you know may be eligible, you can start the application process by visiting the SSA's website, calling their office, or going to your local Social Security office.

If you're even thinking about applying for Social Security or SSI, it's a good idea to set up an online account.

Starting March 31, the SSA is rolling out stronger identity verification measures, which will include online identity proofing.

It’s always best to get ahead of the game!

When do Social Security payments arrive?

Every month, about 7.4 million Americans rely on SSI payments, and about a third of them also receive Social Security payments.

If you’re one of those beneficiaries, you likely know that Social Security payments arrive based on your birthdate:
  • Second Wednesday: If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th
  • Third Wednesday: If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday: If your birthday falls between the 21st and the end of the month

For those who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, payments are issued on the 3rd of each month. And if you also receive SSI, that payment arrives on the 1st.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of Social Security, staying informed is key.

Whether it's understanding payment schedules or planning for future benefits, every bit of knowledge helps.

This is not clear. Do we get 2 payments in May and still get the usual payment on June 1st?
Great question, Viking! Yes, SSI recipients will receive two payments in May—one on May 1 (for May benefits) and another on May 30 (for June benefits), since June 1 falls on a Sunday. So while it may seem like an extra payment, you're still just receiving your usual monthly benefits—June’s is simply arriving early. :)
