Der Wienerschnitzel

Back in the day, nothing hit quite like a chili dog from Der Wienerschnitzel on a warm afternoon—with its bright yellow A-frame buildings and red-lettered signs. You didn’t need fancy menus, just a few bucks and a craving for something fast, hot, and delicious. Opened in 1961, it was more than just a hot dog stand—it was a memory maker. Whether you grabbed a quick bite after school, stopped in on the way to the beach, or made it a Saturday lunch tradition, Der Wienerschnitzel had a way of weaving itself into the everyday moments of American life. They may have dropped the “Der” somewhere along the way, but for many, it’s always been Der Wienerschnitzel—and always will be. Do you have fond memories of this food spot? Share it with us!

What was your favorite treat from back then? Take us on a trip down memory lane!

My first job was at one of these iconic hot dog shops in Galveston, Texas. It was right across the street from the beach and we had some amazing customers. It was a fun job and I will always remember those times back in 1968.

Back in the 60's, my brother would always take my sister and me someplace on the weekend. Of course, our favorite place was Santa Monica Beach. We would look forward to stopping at DER Wienerschnitzel for their hot dogs on the way home. We loved them. One time, we had taken some of the neighborhood kids and we still stopped. It was almost closing time, and we ordered 16 chili cheese dogs! So close to closing, but they came through, fresh and delicious! Nowadays, I am so lucky to be within 3 miles of a Wienerschnitzel, I go often, and I take time to remember the good times my brother gave us. He was such a good brother. You see, he supported us and raised us from the time I was 10. Our mother never had to work again; he took care of everything. I miss him so much.😇😇😇
