Egg prices under scrutiny: America’s largest producer cooperates in federal probe

In recent years, the rising cost of everyday essentials has sparked growing concern among consumers, particularly when it comes to items once considered affordable and reliable.

From the kitchen table to grocery store aisles, questions continue to surface about what’s really driving the numbers on our receipts.

While factors like supply shortages and global unrest often make headlines, there are also growing concerns about market behavior behind the scenes.

Now, a major investigation is shedding light on whether the price of one household staple—eggs—has been influenced by more than just demand.

Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg producer in the United States, has confirmed it is cooperating with the Department of Justice in an active investigation into potential price-fixing across the egg industry.

The Mississippi-based company disclosed in a recent regulatory filing that it received a civil investigative demand from the DOJ last month.

While the full scope of the investigation remains unclear, it centers on whether major egg producers may have worked together to artificially raise prices for American consumers.

Egg prices have been a hot-button issue over the past two years.

Although costs have eased in recent weeks, wholesale prices are still up approximately 60% from the same time last year, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Cal-Maine’s cooperation comes as the federal government ramps up scrutiny of consumer pricing, especially in areas that affect everyday households.

Abigail Slater, head of the DOJ's Antitrust Division, has emphasized that the agency is prioritizing enforcement against anticompetitive conduct in consumer markets.

According to industry analysts, the recent decline in prices is tied to a lull in new bird flu cases and weaker demand.

Still, volatility remains a concern—particularly in light of economic policies and global trade conditions.

Some experts have pointed to recent tariffs, including those from the Trump administration, as a possible contributing factor to rising costs of imported eggs.

These complexities have made it difficult to pin pricing solely on one issue, prompting the DOJ to dig deeper into producer conduct.

Cal-Maine Foods says it cannot predict the investigation’s outcome or how long it may last.

The company has stated that it is fully cooperating with the inquiry.

For now, egg buyers across the country are watching closely, hoping for answers—and fairer prices ahead.

You state that inflation at 40% was worldwide…. Could it be cuz the last administration led the way? Eggs were $1.99 a dozen under Trump. Biden did another scare of bird flue and killed millions of chickens. While I agree that price gouging can exist it’s not the sole reason. There are always those that don’t follow the rules and should be investigated. Eggs are at 4.50 a dozen in my area still and it’s not because of Trump’s tariffs which didn’t take effect until the first of this month.
