Front Porch Forum: “Friendly Fences” (06/21/2025)

Gather ’round, GrayViners! Today, we received a letter from “Friendly Fences”—they're in a bit of a bind and could use your advice. Here’s what they wrote:

Dear TGV,
I’ve always believed in neighborly kindness. Over the years, our block has seen plenty of potlucks, shared tools, and friendly waves. Recently, though, my new neighbors have taken a shine to my backyard especially my old porch swing and flower garden.

At first, I didn’t mind them stopping by for a quick hello or a chat over the fence. But lately, they’ve started inviting themselves over more often, sometimes settling in for the afternoon without much notice. Last week, I came home from errands to find them having coffee on my swing!

They’re lovely people, and I truly don’t want to hurt their feelings or seem unfriendly. But I miss having my quiet mornings, and sometimes just want my own space.

Has anyone else dealt with neighbors who blur the line between “friendly” and “a little too comfortable”? How did you handle it without making things awkward? Any advice for finding that gentle balance?

Appreciate any wisdom,
Friendly Fences

So, GrayViners, what’s your take on this? Share your thoughts and advice below! And if you need some advice of your own, send us a message here!

I would just politely ask them to not invite them selves to my area. Give them an idea where they can purchase a porch swing if they want one. Also tell them you appreciate your early ME time and don't wish to share it with any one.
