Congratulations to our letter sender on their new home! Image source: Pexels

Pull up a seat, GrayViners! This “Home at Last” letter needs your know-how. It got us wondering—what does it really take to settle in when you finally buy a home later in life? Read on and share your best new homeowner tips.

Greetings, TGV!

Well, if you’d told me last year I’d be standing in my very own living room, paint samples in one hand and a plunger in the other, I would have laughed you right off the porch. But here I am: first-time homeowner at 72. After decades of renting, signing my name on all those papers felt like climbing a mountain. The ink was barely dry before the water heater gave out, the mailbox fell off the wall, and my “welcome mat” became a squirrel’s favorite snack. Let’s just say the learning curve has been… lively.

Still, every time I walk through my front door, I get a little thrill. There’s a kind of pride that comes with knowing this patch of grass, leaky faucet and all, really is mine.

But boy, are there things nobody tells you! Like, who knew you’d have to budget for gutter cleaning? Or that “just one coat of paint” can turn into three trips to the hardware store? I’ve patched a fence, met half the neighborhood over lost mail, and spent more hours than I’d like to admit looking up “how to fix…” videos online.

So I’m turning to the folks who know a thing or two: For those who bought a house later in life, what helped you settle in and make it your own? Any rookie mistakes to avoid? Did you find any shortcuts for home maintenance, or clever ways to get to know the neighbors (besides chasing their dog out of your garden)?

I’d really appreciate your stories, tips, or just a good laugh about your own first weeks as a homeowner. If there’s one thing I’ve learned already, it’s that sometimes the best tool in your kit is advice from someone who’s been there.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone,
Home at Last

That’s the story, GrayViners! If you’ve weathered the surprises of homeownership or have a tip for making a new place feel just right, now’s your chance to share. And if you’re in the middle of your own adventure and need some advice, don’t be shy—start a conversation right here!

We moved into our first house while they were moving out. They had had a washer and dryer in the laundry room when we saw the house so we thought, great no problem. As soon as we started moving in our washer and dryer, my Dad discovered that not only was the laundry room not wired for 220 but there wasn't even a vent for the dryer to vent. After several trips to the hardware store and my Dad's great knowledge of everything fixable, we finally had a working dryer.

Our best advice may be too late for you. We made sure that there be a thorough inspection by a professional. We made the owner fix whatever was broken or needed repairs . It had all wood floors which were carpeted. We had her remove them to rid the place of cat pee smell. It worked and she had the hard wood floors buffed. We also insisted that before we signed on the proverbial dotted line that the owner had to empty all of her belongings so we could see everything clearly. We were in our late 60’s. Our precautions made a huge difference.
To meet the neighbors I baked several dozen cookies and brought them to the nearest ones. They turned out to be good neighbors who keep watch on each other’s places.
