Front Porch Forum: “How do I gently push back when my daughter treats me like I’m losing it?” (09/18/2025)

Come closer, GrayViners! Today’s letter writer finds themselves in a tricky situation and could use some thoughtful advice. Take a look at their letter below:

Hi GrayVine,

My daughter has always been loving, but lately I’ve noticed a shift. She double-checks my medication bottles. She finishes my sentences. She insists on joining me at doctor visits. The worst is the look in her eyes—the one that says she’s waiting for me to fall apart.

But I’m still here. I still cook my own meals. I still drive to the market. I still do crosswords in pen and win arguments with the TV news anchor. I’m not in denial. I know I’ve slowed down in some ways. But I haven’t disappeared.

How do I tell her that what I need is support, not surveillance? That she’s making me feel smaller than I am? I love her. I know she’s scared. But I want her to see me as I am, not as someone she’s already losing.

With all my heart,
Sharp, Not Senile

I feel that she heard or read about something that has prompted her response in this way. I don't know how to fix it other than ensure her that you are "still with it" and appreciate her concerns but that you can take care of yourself.
