Pull up a seat, GrayViners! “Ring of Doubt” has a mystery that’s hitting a little too close to home—missing items, mounting questions, and now an heirloom ring gone without a trace. If you started noticing precious things disappearing, would you chalk it up to forgetfulness or trust your instincts that something isn’t right? Dive into the story and share: what would your next step be if you were in these shoes?

Dear TGV,

Some days, I wonder if my house is playing tricks on me or if I’m just losing track of things in the shuffle of daily life. It started off as small things: a shopping bag I use every week, a watch I always kept in the same dish, a pair of earrings that seemed to vanish into thin air. I always brushed it off as simple forgetfulness.

But last week, something happened that I can’t shake. My mother’s heirloom ring, which I always take off before bed and place on my bedside table disappeared. I’ve turned my bedroom upside down, checked every corner, drawer, and even the laundry hamper. It’s driving me crazy because its nowhere to be found! That ring has been in my family for generations, and losing it has left me more rattled and heartbroken than I expected.

I am not with anyone besides my caretaker who helps out a few days a week, and she’s always been polite and trustworthy. I feel awful even letting my mind wander in that direction, but with so many little things missing, I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to it. At the same time, I worry I might just be misplacing things and making a fuss over nothing.

Has anyone else gone through something like this? How do you decide when to speak up, or who to talk to, when you aren’t even sure yourself? I’d appreciate any advice on how to handle this gently and wisely. Maybe you’ve found a way to get to the bottom of a household mystery or maybe you can help me sort out whether I’m just being forgetful.

Thank you,
Ring of Doubt

Just tell her that you can't find it and ask if she saw it and placed it somewhere else. lt wouldn't hurt to just ask her but don't accuse you. You explained in your letter that you have been misplacing other things. Extra eyes could help especially with something so small. lt could fall off and bounce somewhere you haven't checked. When my daughter was small, she put things in the toilet just to watch them flush. l had an old engagement that l had put the diamond on my mom's wedding band. lt turned up missing and l am pretty sure that my daughter flushed it
