Happy Friday, dear GrayViners!

As the weekend gets closer, I’ve been daydreaming about doing something a little daring. I wonder if it’s time to dye my hair blue—I’ve been working my way through the rainbow and only have two colors left! (I had to pause because all the bleaching nearly had me going bald!) It got me thinking about the hair adventures we’ve all had—perms, mullets, or that one “what was I thinking?” cut. What’s the boldest hairstyle you’ve ever had—or always wished you tried? Can’t wait to hear your stories—bonus points if you share a photo! 😁

When I was younger my grandfather used to put a bowl on our head and cut our hair. Thank goodness that stopped. Years later I let my hair grow till it was down to my butt. Decided I wanted it cut like Farrah Fawcett so went to hair salon with a picture of how i wanted it. Not paying attention while my hair was being cut it ended up in only two layers and she cut it above my shoulder. I walked out crying and did not pay. I let it grow a bit and for 4 years had the spiral perm. Started to cause too much damage to my hair so just let it grow again. I dye my own hair and really don’t do it unless there is a big event or I feel it is getting too gray and color it. I am a beauty school drop out and trim or cut my own hair until I feel I want it cut a certain way than go to a hair salon.

My hair has always been very dark with Auburn high lights. Decided wanted to go Platnimum Blonde. Oh dear what a mess. Having it done in a salon and bleaching murder on hair and scalp. For some reason, turned purple and eventually got it there. Looked horrible on me and then working to get it back to normal. Best solution, shaved my head. Now i have Silver but enjoy having Purple streaks put in and some times use other colors.

I watched my mom get away from her natural red hair to a Champaign color. I didn’t like it after that. I vowed I would never dye my strawberry blonde hair. Now the majority of my hair is on the gray side. I’m fine with that! When the bright colors were popular I still had no desire for a hair color change. I was never bold about anything really! The only bold thing I did was join the Air Force. I excelled in the field I was trained to do, and do well! 🫡 🇺🇸☮️

I had feathers in my hair for about 5 years - 2015-2020. I had super short hair and my hairdresser would save all the ends that she trimmed off of clients who had longer hair with long feathers. I had about 5 to 6 pieces beaded into my short hair. I would do seasonal colors for Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc. I always got compliments because it was unique. I never did see anyone else with short, pixie haircuts put feathers in for accents. I finally stopped during the pandemic since I had to let my hair grow out due to no hair appts. It was a fun style.

I don't know if you would call it a "Bold" hairstyle, but when I was in college, I wanted an easy hairstyle and the stylist cut my hair very short. It was probably 1 inch in length on the sides and back and on top, about 2 inches. It just happened that the next weekend, my parents came to get me for a weekend at home (about 2 hrs drive). They hated the very short haircut and would not let me go and visit my friends during that weekend. I essentially "stayed home" the entire time and since we lived on a farm, no one saw my very short haircut. Of course, it grew out with time.
Also during college, I bleached my hair blonde. Being blonde was an objective of many during the late 60's, early 70's. But dealing with the roots as my hair grew out, was a nuisance and difficult to deal with. I eventually dyed my hair back to its usual color and forgot about being a blonde.
Lastly, I remember the perms my Mother would have me get a couple times a year. These were the super tight curly perms and my Mother would tell the stylist to leave the perm solution on as long as possible, so the perm would last longer. I don't know if the perm actually lasted longer because of this but I do remember the curls being so tight, it was almost impossible to comb your hair for several days after the perm. Eventually, my Mother relented and allowed me to get what was called a "body perm" which was easier to deal with. I still get body perms, because otherwise my hair is straight and very fine.

I wish i had a picture. I had my hair died in light Rainbow colors. My hair is below my hips so super long, but when i braided it, it was beautiful. I left it that way a couple months. I really liked it. I got constant complement's on it. I wouldnt have the nerve to do it again now. I just stick with my true red and now grey.

In the 80s Big hair was the style and I loved it. I used aqua net extra super hold in the purple can, even a tornado couldn’t budge my hair. It was a fun era and I wish I could live it over again. …… lol
