Hey GrayViners!

Nothing brings people together quite like food, does it? Every family seems to have that one dish—the one that gets passed down, the one everyone insists is the way to make it. Sometimes it’s a secret spice, sometimes it’s just love stirred in with the wooden spoon.

So here's today's question: What’s one recipe that your family believes you’ve perfected over generations?

In my own family, Sunday afternoons always meant the house was filled with the smell of tomato sauce simmering on the stove. My grandmother swore her version—slow-cooked with a pinch of sugar—was unmatched, and she guarded that recipe like gold.

I’d love to hear the dishes that tell your family story—whether it’s a pie, a casserole, or something bubbling away in a pot.

Share it with us below, and let’s see what treasured recipes our GrayVine community is made of!

Cheers!

Our traditional family recipe is for glumpkis, stuffed cabbage. We only make it twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. It is quite a process. We make a huge amount so we can send home with family. Our secret ingredient is sage. I notice most other recipes for it don't have sage, but ours always has. The time to make it is coming up and I can't wait!

My Grandma taught my mom Czech dishes. Two of the family favorites are Chicken Paprikash and Yeast Dumplings. They are so good.

I have a Pumpkin Bread that i always make. Took 3 recipes tweaked them and came up with a goody. Also my Lasagne.
Thanks so much for sharing @Arkie98 ! 🍴 Pumpkin bread sounds absolutely delicious – especially since you’ve perfected it by combining and tweaking three recipes. Do you make it more on the sweet side with spices like cinnamon, or do you keep it more savory? And lasagne is such a family favorite – is yours the classic meaty version, or do you sometimes experiment with other fillings?

Thank you for sharing this @senior71 ! Glumpkis sound absolutely wonderful – I love that it’s a twice-a-year tradition and something your whole family can enjoy together. The addition of sage as your secret ingredient makes it sound extra special and unique. Do you serve them with a sauce on top, or do you let the flavors stand on their own? And when you make such a big batch, do you freeze some for later, or is it all enjoyed straight away with family?

My Dad loved his garlic pickles. After his death, people were asking for his receipt.
Thank you for sharing this memory @tennis 💚 Garlic pickles sound amazing, and it’s so special that your dad’s recipe lives on through the people who loved it. Did he have a particular twist that made his pickles stand out from others? And have you or your family carried on making them since he passed, or are they one of those treasured recipes that everyone remembers fondly but doesn’t quite taste the same without him?

My Chocolate Brownies
Thanks for sharing @GVKarianne2145 ! 🍫 Chocolate brownies are such a classic treat, and I love that yours are the family favorite. Do you make them fudgy and rich, or more on the cakey side? And do you ever add extras like nuts or a swirl of caramel, or do you keep them wonderfully simple and chocolatey?

Sauerbraten
AUSUKAI OR KRUSCUKI (LITTLE EARS – (LITHUANIA cookies)
Thank you for sharing @Hazeleyes ! Those sound absolutely amazing – such a wonderful mix of savory and sweet. Sauerbraten is such a hearty, comforting dish, and those Lithuanian cookies sound so unique (I love the name “little ears”!). Do you make them around special occasions or holidays, or are they an anytime treat in your family? And when you do Sauerbraten, do you serve it with traditional sides like dumplings or potatoes?

Thanks for sharing @dkleslie52 ! 🌶️ Chili is such a comforting dish, and everyone seems to have their own special way of making it. Do you make yours with beans, without beans, or maybe even add something a little unexpected? And is it a recipe you enjoy most in the colder months, or is it a year-round favorite in your family?

Thank you for sharing this @ElysaS ! 🥰 What a beautiful tradition to have recipes passed down from your grandma to your mom and now through the family. Chicken Paprikash with yeast dumplings sounds absolutely delicious – such a comforting combination. Do you still make it the traditional way your grandma taught, or have you put your own twist on it over the years? And is it one of those dishes that brings everyone together around the table on special occasions?

My mom made Lemon Icebox Pie for special occasions.
Thanks for sharing @Marilea ! 🍋 Lemon Icebox Pie sounds so refreshing and perfect for special occasions. I love that it was your mom’s go-to recipe – those kinds of desserts always carry the sweetest memories. Do you still make it the same way she did, or have you added your own little twist over the years? And is it one of those desserts that disappears quickly once it’s on the table?

When I did make sauerbraten I made it with spaetzle most of the time . Sometimes I made it with Kartoffelklosse (potato balls)
