We had just started being able to wear pants to school. And that's when bell bottoms abd hip huggers became popular. It was a sight to behold. 🤣

When I was in high school back in the 50s, poodle skirts and saddle oxfords were very popular! 😜
Yes! That was true for me!
As much as what was "cool" to wear to school in the 1950s and 1960s was what we couldn't wear. Skirts had to be long enough for the bottom to skim the floor when you knelt down. Nothing shorter or you were sent home. No jeans and no midriff tops (although I don't know if there even were midriff tops). No pants of any kind (except the last day of school which was a "play day." I especially liked wearing sneakers of different colors to match my outfit.I didn’t know it at the time, but my boyfriend gave me several different colors of sneakers that he and his buddy had stolen from inventory of the two stores where they worked. I just liked the sneakers in ignorant bliss.

Yes! I graduated from high school in 1964.

Thanks for sharing that @Samcmillen ! Poodle skirts and saddle oxfords are such iconic 50s fashion staples — I can just picture the look! Did you ever have a favorite poodle skirt or color you loved wearing back then?

I was in high school in the 70 s…,doesn’t seem that long ago.Though we couldn’t ware mini skirts to school at the time, very popular and boots, mine were knee high and white..Crop tops and bell bottom pants that had huge bell flares on the bottom.
Thanks for sharing @terriespell ! The 70s had such fun, bold styles — those white knee-high boots and big bell bottoms must’ve looked fantastic together. Did you have a favorite outfit or occasion where you remember feeling especially stylish in them?

Believe it or not: flannels and frayed jeans . .
and that was the girls!
Flannels and frayed jeans — that’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing this one @mar2hop2 . I love how effortlessly cool that look was, especially for the girls. Did you ever mix in any accessories to complete the outfit, or was it all about keeping it casual?

Bell bottom jeans, a bodysuit, and fringed jacket!
That sounds like such a stylish combo — bell bottom jeans, a bodysuit, and a fringed jacket! Thank you for sharing this @teriterrill , it really paints a picture of the era’s fashion. Did you ever wear that outfit to a special event or just for everyday fun?

Oh, I thought I was so cool wearing my white go go boots in the 60's when I was a kid!
White go-go boots — now that’s peak 60s cool! I love that you remember feeling so stylish in them. Thanks for sharing that memory @mmarple ! Did you pair them with a particular outfit that made you feel extra confident?

Bell bottoms with huge flares and very low cut. Mini skirts and 6"wedgies.
Wow, that sounds like the ultimate 70s outfit — those big flared bell bottoms, mini skirts, and sky-high wedgies! Thanks for sharing this fun throwback @NIBOR0 . Did you have a go-to outfit you loved most back then?

When I was a teenager back in the 1960s, there were different dress styles for the girls ... the "Mods" where everyone dressed British style after the Beatles, wearing Go-Go boots, mini skirts, long earrings, and white eyeshadow with black eyeliner all around, white lipstick, and teased hair. Then there was the "Colleeges" where we dressed like college kids, wearing tennis sweaters, penny loafers, turtle-necks, berets, etc. Finally, there was the hippy style, where we wore bell-bottoms, tie-dyed tee-shirts, no bras, no makeup, and headbands around our foreheads. It was a great, free, and easy time.
What a wonderful snapshot of 60s fashion — you’ve captured all the iconic looks so vividly! Thank you for sharing this @NancyCL ; it sounds like such an exciting and expressive time for style. Did you identify more with one of those groups — Mod, Collegiate, or Hippy — or did you mix it up depending on your mood?

That’s such an interesting glimpse into the strict dress codes back then — and the story about the sneakers made me smile! Thank you for sharing this memory @JoyALorton . It’s funny how something as simple as colorful shoes could make such a statement. Do you remember which color pair ended up being your favorite?

For me it was bleeding madras shirts and white Levi jeans. The colored designs on the shirts would run together, or "bleed," when washed. This was in 1966-67.
Bleeding madras shirts and white Levi's jeans — that’s such a classic 60s combo! I love that you remembered the colors blending together after washing. Thanks for sharing this vivid memory @DaveB48 ! Did you ever try to keep one looking crisp, or did you embrace the ā€œbled togetherā€ style?

View attachment 68274One thing that was popular in the 70s was Ditto brand pants. They had the distinctive seam that went down the back of one leg, over the bum and down the other leg. I had a sky blue pair and loved them. Also platform shoes.
Oh yes — Ditto pants! That curved seam design was so distinctive; they really were the height of 70s fashion. Thanks for sharing this @hawaiimegrl — I can just picture those sky blue ones with platform shoes to match. Did you have a favorite outfit you’d pair them with?

Back in the day I would spray bleach on a pair of dark blue denim jeans or a denim jacket. Oh, how I loved the look ! (my mother was not fond of this idea)
That’s such a fun memory — DIY fashion at its best! Thanks for sharing @RoyzToyz . I can just imagine how cool those bleached jeans or jackets must’ve looked, even if your mom wasn’t exactly thrilled about it. Did you ever try any other creative denim experiments after that?

As a teenager in the 70's hip huggers were the thing! I was begging for a pair so I could feel cool. My dad finally relented. I felt like I was walking on air the first time I wore them to school.
That’s such a sweet memory — I can just picture that moment! Hip huggers were the must-have item in the 70s. Thanks for sharing this @Cindy k ; it’s great that your dad eventually gave in. Do you remember what you paired them with for that first school day debut?

it was bobby socks saddle oxford shoes and poodle skirts..those were the best days
Bobby socks, saddle oxfords, and poodle skirts — such timeless 50s fashion! Thanks for sharing that lovely memory @moredolls ; it really captures the spirit of the era. Did you ever go to school dances or sock hops wearing that outfit?
