Here’s the secret to getting your Social Security checks faster – don’t miss out!

Welcome to the digital era, where even the most traditional processes are getting a high-tech makeover. For our GrayVine community, adapting to these changes can sometimes feel like a daunting task.

But don’t worry! Today, we're here to demystify one of the most crucial updates you'll want to make: getting your Social Security checks quicker. What steps should you be taking?

Gone are the days of waiting for the mail carrier to deliver your Social Security checks. Now, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses Direct Deposit.

With Direct Deposit, your funds are electronically transferred directly into your bank account. This means you could be enjoying your hard-earned benefits with speed and ease, often within 21 days of filing your federal tax return.

The US government has embraced this method due to a new law mandating electronic payments for efficiency and security.

So, to have your money returned directly into your bank account, you would have to follow these steps, as per the Social Security:
  • When using tax software, select the Direct Deposit option when prompted.
  • Provide your bank account number and routing number where you want to receive your refund.
  • Contact a tax advisor
The Social Security Administration (SSA) reminds us that keeping your bank account details up-to-date is crucial. This ensures “we can continue to deposit the monthly check for your benefits on time”.

In any case that there is a change in your personal or bank details, the SSA must be informed immediately so they can continue payment of the monthly amounts sourced from the State benefits or income of each beneficiary.

If you need to update your Direct Deposit information, here's how to do it with ease:
  • Call the SSA and let the representative know you want to update your Direct Deposit details.
  • Provide your current routing and account numbers.
The SSA staff will handle the rest, ensuring your income remains uninterrupted.

For those who haven't ventured into the world of banking, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) offers resources to help you open an account, either online or at a local branch. This step is essential for receiving Social Security benefits or managing your work income.

Alternatively, the Direct Express card is a convenient option. It's a debit card that doesn't require a bank account.

The SSA will deposit your federal benefit payment directly onto the card, and your benefits will be ready to use on payday. Plus, you can shop, pay bills, or withdraw cash at a multitude of locations.

I was very distressed when I was not refunded almost $600 because whoever decided that because I shopped at WalMart that 2 fraudulent charges were valid. I was never given any legitimate reason and they never checked where the purchases were made. I did not do those charges and I don't know how they were done, but they robbed me of my own money. Other than that, I tried to do a change in my direct deposit (sent the form) they did not honor it.
