Hi all, my name is Jo, and I'm from Oklahoma. I was going to retire in 2026 but will now wait until 2028. The last two years will be open as far as if I finally get tired of the BS at my job. I will be continuing my cleaning out of unnecessary stuff to lug with me. I have been trying to take advantage of discounts when I become aware of them but can always use more suggestions. Thanks for letting me join.
Hello and great to be here! I am from Florida still hurricane recovering finally warming up after a week of very cold weather for us.
We’ve all landed on uncertain times with a lot of chaos in our future no matter which aisle of politics you live on. I am not judging either way for the sake of my own sanity. The court system will be jammed with lawsuits brought about by the flurry of Executive Orders signed by Trump with many of them found to be unconstitutional, but will be disturbing in nature and chaotic in debate. Cuts to the least of us are sure to follow meaning the poor and sadly, to children daring to wonder where their next meal comes from. I worked hard all my life saving for the rainy days and for retirement. I became disabled suddenly at 53 having not saved nearly enough and caught in the monthly Cobra payments of $800 plus deductibles, copays and coinsurance for 18 months before I aged into to Medicare. I’m grateful my last decade of working was well paid and I was a saver, but not nearly enough to bridge the difference from disability to retirement and onward to the end of life. I get by and my home will be paid for soon, but i don't get to travel as I had dreamed or fix up my house as I had dreamed. I’m blessed compared to so many though especially other women that earned pennies on the dollar compared to men and now are penalized with lower SS checks and pensions. Last I witnessed, the price of living is NOT cheaper than for men and many of these women were single moms before fathers were held accountable for their contribution. I don’t have a clue how young moms are getting by now with housing so expensive. I see many living in cars and vans at Walmart parking lots and at libraries after school to get homework done. I grew up in poverty and remember going to bed hungry more than a few times. That kind of poverty either propels you do do much better or settle for the same because of the tall climb out. That long look up from the bottom is certainly daunting and requires a fierce work ethic to rise above. I was determined to succeed no matter what and finished college and worked fulltime or doubletime all the years I could in a man’s profession. I was passed over more than once because so and so man had a family to take care of.
I am grateful for capped prices on select medications and the amount we will pay on medications annually. I understand that is now being challenged by the republicans wanting to stop that. Such a change benefits the big pharma, not us retired and disabled folks dependent on insulin.
I hope this is a forum for honest and open discussions without being mean and critical. Cutting each other down does no good overall and we all have our own unique experiences and perceptions. Having advice and knowledge to share is welcome and getting to know others on a similar journey would be nice.
