1858: The First Transatlantic Telegram Was Sent
Britain’s Queen Victoria sent a congratulatory message to US President James Buchanan through the newly completed undersea telegraph cable. Buchanan replied with praise for the achievement, calling it “more glorious… than was ever won by conqueror on the field of battle.”

1896: Gold Was Discovered in the Klondike
Prospector George Carmack and his companions found gold in Bonanza Creek, in the Yukon Territory, sparking the Klondike Gold Rush that drew tens of thousands to the region.

1930: The First British Empire Games Opened
Hamilton, Ontario, hosted the inaugural British Empire Games—now the Commonwealth Games—featuring athletes from 11 nations competing in a spirit of unity and friendly competition.

1945: Puyi Was Captured by Soviet Troops
The last emperor of China, who had ruled the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, was seized by Soviet forces while trying to flee to Japan in the final days of World War II.

1946: Direct Action Day Riots Erupted in Calcutta
A communal violence broke out in Calcutta after the Muslim League called for “Direct Action” to demand Pakistan’s creation. Rioting between Hindus and Muslims left more than 4,000 dead and about 100,000 homeless.

1974: The Ramones Played Their First Show
The pioneering punk rock band Ramones made their debut at New York City’s CBGB club. Their raw, fast sound helped ignite the punk movement and launch one of rock’s most influential bands.

1977: Elvis Presley Died
The “King of Rock and Roll” passed away at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee, at age 42, sending shockwaves through the music world and leaving millions of fans in mourning.

2008: Usain Bolt Set a 100m World Record
At the Beijing Olympics, the Jamaican sprinter won the gold medal in 9.69 seconds, breaking his own world record and claiming gold in electrifying fashion.
