1901: President William McKinley’s Assassin Was Executed
US anarchist Leon Czolgosz, convicted of assassinating President William McKinley, was executed in the electric chair at Auburn Prison in New York.

1923: The Republic of Turkey Was Established
The Grand National Assembly in Ankara formally proclaimed the Republic of Turkey and elected Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president, ending the Ottoman era.

1929: “Black Tuesday” Deepened the US Stock Market Crash
Just five days after nearly 13 million US shares were sold in one day, an additional 16 million changed hands in what became known as “Black Tuesday,” intensifying the financial collapse that sparked the Great Depression.

1942: Bob Ross Was Born
American painter and television host Bob Ross was born in Daytona Beach, Florida. He later became beloved for his calm demeanor and The Joy of Painting, inspiring millions with his “happy little trees.”

1969: The First Electronic Message Was Sent via ARPANET
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles sent the first electronic message through ARPANET, the forerunner of the internet. The system crashed after transmitting just the letters “l” and “o.”

1998: Space Shuttle Discovery Launched with John Glenn Aboard
The Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off on mission STS-95, carrying 77-year-old US Senator and former astronaut John Glenn, making him the oldest person to travel into space.

2003: LeBron James Made His NBA Debut
Eighteen-year-old basketball prodigy LeBron James debuted with the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 25 points, six rebounds, and nine assists in his first game—a loss to the Sacramento Kings 106–92.

2015: China Announced The End Of Its One-Child Policy
China officially announced the end of its decades-long one-child policy, allowing all couples to have two children and marking a major shift in national population strategy.

2024: Lost Mayan City Discovered in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
A study published in the journal Antiquities revealed the discovery of a vast 1,500-year-old Mayan city hidden in the jungles of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The site contained more than 6,000 structures, including pyramids reminiscent of those at Chichén Itzá.
