The Top-Row Word

You’ve probably typed it before—without realizing it never left the top line.

What’s the longest English word you can type using just one row of keys? Image source: Pexels

The word is “typewriter.”

It uses only the top row of letters on a standard QWERTY keyboard—Q to P—making it the longest common English word that can be typed without reaching for the middle or bottom rows.

That might not be a coincidence. Some historians believe early typewriter manufacturers chose the word “typewriter” deliberately for demonstration models, placing all its letters on the top row so salesmen could type it quickly during product demos.

Simple, clever… and a little piece of keyboard history, hiding in plain sight.
