What Are Your Stormy Day Comforts?

GrayViners, how are you? Things are a little stormy on my side—thunder’s been rolling in, and let me tell you, it’s not the best weather to face solo! If you’re like me, the sound of thunder can be both calming and a little unsettling, especially when you’re on your own. So, I thought I’d ask—what are your best tips for someone living alone during a thunderstorm? Any cozy routines or storm survival tricks? Some folks swear by a good book and a cup of tea, while others have a favorite movie lined up for rainy days. Or maybe you have some storm-proofing tips to keep your mind at ease when the weather takes a turn. I’d love to hear how you weather the storm! Let me know some of them in the comments below!

The rain has stopped, but it's still gloomy outside.

Stormy suggestions, my Italian mother in law who I adored had a list she would follow, I have followed most of them for years.

If you're outdoors:

  • Seek shelter immediately. If you can't find a sturdy building, get under a large tree or a natural depression in the ground. Avoid isolated trees, as they can be struck by lightning.
  • Stay away from tall objects. Avoid tall objects like trees, telephone poles, or metal fences, as they can attract lightning.
  • Stay away from water. Water is a good conductor of electricity, so avoid swimming, fishing, or being near bodies of water during a thunderstorm.
  • Curl into a ball. If you're caught in the open and can't find shelter, curl into a ball and put your feet together. This will minimize your contact with the ground.
If you're indoors:

  • Unplug electronics. This will protect them from power surges caused by lightning.
  • Stay away from windows. Lightning can strike windows and cause glass to shatter.
  • Avoid using the phone or internet. These can be dangerous during a thunderstorm.
Have a great day.

I love to listen to the rain so I try to read when it’s raining outside. It gets my mind off of gloomy things. Also, my apartment has a safe room and if my alarm goes off for really bad weather, such as tornadoes, I go inside there and close the door, and sit and read.

@Jmarone1 Thank you for sharing these thoughtful suggestions! Your Italian mother-in-law sounds like she had such practical wisdom, and it’s so heartwarming to hear how her advice has carried on with you over the years. I’ll definitely keep these tips in mind. Wishing you a wonderful day ahead!

@Johnna That truly does sound peaceful! There’s something so comforting about the sound of rain, isn’t there? I love how you’ve turned those rainy moments into reading time—such a wonderful way to find calm in the storm. It only gets tricky when the rain gets heavy and the wind starts up. Thank you for sharing this, I really appreciate it!

I love a good storm,I'll sit out on porch as it rolls by,but that's just me
@gettingolderdaily I love that! There's something so peaceful about watching a storm roll in, isn’t there? Sitting on the porch with the sound of rain and the fresh air—it sounds like a beautiful way to embrace the moment. Thank you for sharing that heartwarming image! 😊
