General Discussion Thread 06.21.2025

Hello, wonderful GrayViners! Sophia here, hoping to brighten your day with a bit of light conversation.

What’s a food you didn’t like as a kid but genuinely enjoy now?

Tastes change over the years. Maybe it was broccoli, olives, or something as bold as blue cheese. What once made you wrinkle your nose might now be something you look forward to at the dinner table.

For me? It was mushrooms. As a child, they reminded me of rubber and rain. These days, I sauté them in butter and garlic and consider them a little treat.

I’d love to hear your stories. What dish once made you grimace and now brings you comfort?

With warmth and an open recipe book,
Sophia 💓

Liver and onions. Just the smell of it would make me gag. Forced to eat it 'Because It's good for you.' About the time I was 30 got with a group from work to do lunch at a cafeteria. Asked the guy across from me what he got that smelled so good. Liver And onions. Trip next week that is what I ordered and loved it. Told my wife about it, She had been in the health field since high school. She tells me 'You can't eat that! It's an organ meat.' Wish they'd make up they're minds.

As a kid, I could not eat squash, of any kind. I especially did not like butternut squash because of its texture, Now, as an adult, I love all kinds of squash, but particularly love mashed butternut squash with butter and salt and pepper.

Winter squash, brussel sprouts, liver and onions. Never did and never will. My 2 brothers and I had to eat whatever was on our plates. You were NOT excused from the table until you ate it. My younger brother tried to sneak his liver and onions under the table to feed it to our dog. It wasn’t a good plan because all 3 of us were doing the same thing! If we or even just one of us didn’t eat them by bedtime, it was served as breakfast in the morning. Lousy idea by the parental units!
I have tried them as an adult with them being fixed in different ways but NOPE! Still don’t like them!
We eventually had to surrender to them because we didn’t know where our next meal was coming from or when we could eat again. I was floored when I went in the military and saw that we were lined up for chow 3 times every single day! What an eye opening for me! 😋🥴

That’s a great story. Funny how something we once dreaded can suddenly become a favorite. I had to smile at your wife’s reaction. Liver really does stir up strong opinions!

Butternut squash with butter and a little seasoning sounds so comforting. Texture can really throw us off as kids. Glad it found its way back to your plate.

Thank you for sharing that. Sounds like you and your brothers had quite the strategy going. Liver and onions at breakfast... now that’s dedication. I’m glad things got better later on.
