Hello GrayViners,

I woke up this morning from the most vivid dream—I’d just won the lottery and was already lounging in a breezy tropical villa, drink in hand, sea breeze in my hair. For a second, it felt so real… like I had it.

Of course, real life snapped back in quickly—but the feeling stuck with me. And it got me wondering:

If you suddenly won $1 million today, what’s the very first thing you’d buy?

Would it be practical—like paying off your house? Would it be a lifelong dream: a classic car, an art collection, a trip around the world? Or maybe something small, symbolic, and immediate… just because you could?

So I’d love to hear:
  • What would your first purchase be?
  • What would it say about what matters to you?
  • And has your answer changed over time?
Let’s talk dreams, dollar signs, and the surprising truths in our wish lists.

Love,
Sophia

I would try and buy my entire small (12 units) HOA community made up of seniors, (mostly widows, or divorced ladies) some in their late 80's so that the 3 younger (60-early 70's) ladies that are acting like middle schooler girl bullies that do not want to follow HOA by-laws or any other laws that a HOA has to follow to remain a NFP Association. I would then turn it into a private ownership and get rid of the 3 bullies. That way my HOA would be a much better place for all of us to in peace!

Wow, that would be my first words. I would buy a house not big. It had a little mother-in-law house in the back. I’d let my son and my grandson live in my big house and I would live in the house in the back. I have so many dreams it’s hard to say all of them. I would buy a small place in Pennsylvania, where all my family lives and where my husband is buried and I would use that for something if I wanted to to go back and see everybody everything I have and everything I can do would be for my grandson and my son. They are the most important people in my life.

First I would tithe it to my church! I would like to take two cruises one to Alaska and one touring the New England states. Now to practicality, I would pay off my car, but I would get a brand new car so I wouldn’t have to worry about it breaking down then I would buy a double wide trailer and put it on a piece of property back home where my family lives, and after that use it for philanthropic purposes.

After reading everyone's answers I feel a bit embarrassed to say mine. I'd buy a huge t-bone steak and a pound of jumbo shrimp. I know... but in my defense I never had breakfast or lunch! LOL After my tummy was happy and full, I'd go the route of everyone else and do the bills, house, and car thing.

I would love to be able to build a home that is handicap accessible throughout the home. My husband and I are in wheelchairs and we have a son with autism. Nothing ridiculously fancy, just a home. We have never been able to buy a house because of our limited income. A home with room for a small garden and for dogs. We have always had a fur baby in our lives. Would love to be off grid and never have to pay another electric bill! We currently live in the county that pays the highest electric bills in the COUNTRY! Oh, and trees would be delightful!

Wow, that’s such a thoughtful plan. It’s clear you really care about your neighbors and want peace for everyone there. I hope things get better in your community, even without the million.
